Tommy Hilfiger has launched on Spree, which means you can now shop the iconic American brand from the comfort of wherever you use your phone. So much life.
But who is Tommy Hilfiger? You know the name, but how much do you know about the man? Could you identify him out of a lineup? Not really? No stress. A good old fashion internet stalk is in order: here’s what we found.
The one on the left is Thomas Jacob Hilfiger, currently 67, born in New York. Here he is at the Met Ball with his second wife, former model Dee Ocleppo (so much more on her later).
The TH origin story goes something like this
Tommy is the second of nine children. Dad is of Dutch/German descent and mom Irish. After school, Tommy used his $150 dollar life savings to open a clothing store with his friends, where they had rock concerts and sold records in the basement. Tommy accepted a designer position at Calvin Klein in the early eighties, but before he could get to work got snatched up by an investor who paved the way to him launching the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation in 1985.
Dee Ocleppo’s Instagram bio reads “Wife, Mother, Sister, Friend, Traveler, Adventurer, Creative Director of Judith Leiber… And anything else I need to be!” At 51 and with three children, she’s body goals. Not the type of woman who stresses about being taller than her man, she comes off as an intelligent entrepreneurial powerhouse. Her eponymous label offers bags, men’s’ shoes, and plenty a high heel manufactured in Italy with an American design sensibility. She married Tommy in 2008.
For the love of music
In the 90s, Tommy’s brand was in with the hip-hop and preppy crowds. The brand sponsored numerous music events including Britney’s Baby One More Time tour in ’99. Aaliyah was announced as the spokesperson for the corporation in ’97. At the turn of the century, Tommy co-authored a book called Rock Style: A Book of Rock, Hip-Hop, R&B, Punk, Funk and the Fashions That Give Looks to Those Sounds.
In 2016 the first Tommy x Gigi collection hit the runway. It was a brilliant business move: involving the supermodel repositioned the brand for the youth market. Presented as a lavish carnival-themed runway, settings including a 40-foot Ferris wheel at the New York Fashion Week set, the clothes were unmistakably Tommy, but fused with Gigi’s millennial spirit. Their final collection (who will Tommy collaborate with next?) presented in Feb 2018 felt especially relevant with its extreme sport race track inspo.
When Tommy met Spree
Our new-drop Tommy Hilfiger product has all the sporty sensibility of Tommy’s final Gigi outing. But this is Tommy, these are investment pieces, and so it makes sense that they all retain a valuable sense of timelessness. Buying into Tommy means buying into the design legacy he’s built over the past five decades. It’s your chance to not only become a part of that legacy, but build on it.
