Sneakers & Lace-ups

Sneakers and brogues are two sides of the same coin: comfortable, lace-ups that have been around forever. Sort of. The Adidas Stan Smith was born in 1971 and Vans was founded in 1966. Brogues as we know it became popular in the 1920. Except they were called 'spectator shoes' because people wore them when they went to watch sport, proving that there really is a shoe for every occasion. But in the century since, brogues have always been around as women have come to love their girl-meets-boyish styling and the fact that they are comfortable and go with anything. Basic black and dark brown remain classic colours but modern designs include Oxfords, two-toned styles and flatforms. If they have a hint of preppy about them, it could be because brogues became a craze in the late ’50s after Elvis appeared in a pair in 'Jailhouse Rock’ and a knee-length skirt and brogues to this day remain a youthful casual look.

Sneakers and trainers also are not new. What is new, is the amazing range of styles, detailing and colours you'll find today. Camo-coloured sneakers sit next to candyfloss pink trainers that sits next to edgy black sneakers with contrast-colour soles. Details vary from paint splotches to fringing to satin ribbons as laces. Chunky women's sneakers are back with the retro-classic styling that is a nod to Nike's Air Jordans that absolutely everyone wore in the ’80s, even Jay-Z. Another throwback that is back, is sneakers with low profiles (thinner soles) not unlike the original designs of four decades ago. At Spree, you will find all the latest styles – a mash-up of sporty and stylish – for running errands, trekking to your car on the other side of the city, going for lunch with friends and doing the school run without once thinking of changing your shoes.
