Lace-ups & Loafers

Loafers, brogues and lace-up shoes are the easiest smart-casual shoe option for any man. They’re a step up from sneakers but not as formal as your classic Oxfords. They’re an easy style to wear over weekends and look great with jeans, chinos and cropped trousers. Remember, if you’re exposing your ankles and wearing loafers, brogues or boats shoes you can ditch the socks. The loafer is a moccasin-inspired shoe and its biggest characteristic is that it is a slip-on style. The loafer often features a plain strap, a strap with a slit (as with penny loafers), tassels or a metal ornament across the width of your foot. A very casual version of the loafer is the driving moccasin. These are often made of softer materials, are less structured, and have soles and heels are rubber to optimise comfort while you drive. Brogues are not actually a style of shoe, but rather a detail used on most styles of men’s formal and lace-up shoes. Any dress shoe style can have brogueing. Brogue simply refers to the decorative design consisting of tiny perforations on a shoe. Originally, these holes which were practical as they allowed water to squeeze out of shoes with each step. However, they’re now less functional and more decorative. A dressed down alternative to dapper loafers, brogues and lace-up shoes are boat shoes. They’re causal and comfortable and work well with jeans or chinos and a short-sleeve shirt. Boat shoes usually have a broad design and are made with soft materials so they’re usually very comfortable. There are also a number of colour options making them fun and versatile. If you’re keen on something very different with that summer holiday feel, choose a pair of espadrille slip-ons. Go for stripes, a bold print or bright colour.
