If your sock drawer is piled with sensible black, white and grey socks, it’s time to break the trend and have some fun with your sock attire. It has now become acceptable and perhaps even a bit expected for bright socks to peek out of the hem of men’s pants, even in the boardroom. Brightly coloured and patterned socks are fast becoming the norm and this works for both workwear and casual wear. Look out for wool or cotton socks as both are breathable and will ensure your comfort for day-to-day dressing. Cotton is probably your basic fabric and you’ll find most socks in it.
So, what are your sock essentials? There are secret or no-show socks for those days you wear shorts or want to roll up your jeans or wear cropped trousers. No socks doesn’t mean you literally go without socks. You just wear socks that aren’t visible to keep your feet comfortable and dry throughout the day. Don’t confuse these with athletic socks, which are a cropped version of regular socks and you can often see them. They sit just below the ankle bone and they’re ideal for increasing comfort and reducing chaffing. Then there are mid-calf socks, which will probably fill up your drawer as these are the staple of the working man – formal or smart casual, you’ll probably wear these most days. Generally speaking, these don’t look great with shorts, but if in a bright or fun patterned they can work under cropped trousers. A great way to reflect your personality when you are limited to classic black, grey and navy at the office. Just a quick tip, if you do wear a brighter colour suit, try to find a pair of patterned socks that feature the tone of your suit.
